Yesterday, we innocently went to buy two bottles of wine at BTL Harlem Wines. Upon arrival, we were greeted by a very courteous Frenchman who, surprised, praised our fluency in French. When he asked about our origin and assumed we were Italian, we calmly replied, “We are Colombian, but we speak French.” However, his astonishment turned into a racist and despicable gesture when, upon learning our nationality, he removed the bottles from the counter with a sarcastic smile, insinuating that we were thieves. • If you live in Harlem or nearby areas, I strongly recommend that you DO NOT buy any products from this place. If you ARE NOT WHITE, expect a prejudiced and tasteless comment from the staff. It’s also worth mentioning that their prices are excessive compared to other stores in the area.

Popped into BTL Wine Shop for the first time - is so cute ! The selection is fantastic, I got the Pouilly-Fume and Lanzarote. Was so happy to see Jason works there, I used visit him at another shop in Harlem.

The man who served us was nice until he knew we were Colombians, he made a "joke" alluding that we were going to rob him. We were going to buy two wines but after this comment we asked for a refund, we told him that his joke had been prejudiced and discriminatory to which he replied that they were not discriminatory because they had even hired a Colombian woman. He never apologized and also justified that it was just a joke. It is very annoying to have to put up with this type of "jokes" that cover up racist, hegemonic and discriminatory beliefs. Yes, surprise, Colombians can pay for wine, even in your unnecessarily expensive store... by the way, I have not received my refund.

BTL is the absolute best wine store in the area. Everyone is super knowledgeable and can help you find just what you’re looking for, and the selection is amazing. Trust JC’s recommendations if you’re looking to try something new - he never disappoints!!!

I am very sad that this racism experience happened to my relative and even more so in your store. This should not happen. All of us who live in NYC are New Yorkers and deserve respect
